We were looking forward to the plains after getting out of the mountains. Mostly we were hoping to get more tailwinds but the truth is, the prevailing winds in the central plains is from the south. So truth is, out of a month of riding mostly south, we've only had a couple days of tailwind.
From the mountain pass along Hwy. 14 west of Fort Collins at 10,275 feet or so, we have enjoyed almost continuous downhill to western Kansas at about 2,000 feet of elevation. There are few trees. In fact, we did an 88 km stretch where there was only one tree along the road.
Here near Great Bend Kansas we seem to have left the flat riding behind and entered an area of rolling hills where there are actually trees. So we expect to be camping again in a couple days.
